WHAT IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE?

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a common condition caused by inflammation of the soft tissues surrounding the tooth, including the gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone.

Gum recession is the process of the gum tissue surrounding teeth wearing away, or pulling back. This exposes more of your tooth and can make it easy for disease-causing bacteria to build up.

In some cases, mild gum recession can be treated by your dentist with a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) of the affected area. If the gum recession is more severe and cannot be treated with a cleaning, surgery may be required to repair the damage and eliminate the chance of it worsening over time.
