We know that many people experience anxiety about dental appointments or have difficulty sitting through long or complex procedures. To help these patients get the dental care they need with less stress, we provide sedation dentistry.

We can use several methods to achieve conscious sedation, a technique that relaxes a patient deeply, but allows them to remain responsive throughout their sedation. In most cases, patients have little to no memory of their procedures once completed. We can administer sedation in several ways, including nitrous oxide sedation, IV sedation, and oral sedation, and we provide careful monitoring throughout a procedure. When it comes to maintaining great oral and dental health, prevention really is better than cure. During a routine dental checkup, your dentist will have the chance to catch any early signs of problems and to treat them before they become an issue.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Learn more about the types of sedation dentistry provided at Lacombe Smiles Dental.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is delivered through a comfortable nasal mask. It works quickly, bringing a patient to full sedation within minutes. Many patients experience a sense of euphoria and lightness while under nitrous oxide sedation. Once the procedure is complete, we remove the mask and provide pure oxygen to flush out the sedative and restore a patient to full alertness within minutes.

IV Sedation

Intravenous sedation is delivered directly into the bloodstream. It is used to achieve a moderate level of sedation that creates a lengthy period of amnesia in which the patient will not store memories. We can easily adjust the dosage throughout the appointment. Our dentists provide patients with instructions about what to do before and after an appointment, which may include avoiding certain medications (prescription or over-the-counter) and not eating or drinking within several hours of the appointment.

Oral Sedation

For oral sedation, our dentists will prescribe pills ahead of time and provide instructions for when and how to take the pills. Typically, a patient will take some or all of the sedatives about an hour before an appointment, ensuring a state of relaxation has been reached by the time the appointment begins. We may also provide additional sedatives once a patient arrives to help maintain the effects of the sedative throughout the appointment.
